In the early 80’s, this was the case: Kareem Abdul Jabbar was the only athlete who had more than a $100,000 shoe  deal. Then came 1984, and the situation changed forever.

Michael Jordan signed a record sponsorship deal with Nike, and Air Jordan was born. 30 years later it still thrives and dominates basketball shoe market in the US. Michael Jordan’s career started in the early 80’s: in 1981, he accepted a basketball scholarship to North Carolina. After 3 years, he entered the NBA Draft, and won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics.
